Wizards’ Bradley Beal becomes fourth player to enter Team USA basketball for Tokyo Olympics
Team USA’s basketball team is starting to take shape as a fourth player has entered the 2021 Olympics roster.
Wizards star Bradley Beal is latest to join the squad, says Athletic’s Shams Charania. He will play with Trail Blazers goaltender Damian Lillard, Celtics forward Jayson Tatum and Warriors forward Draymond Green, the other three players who have signed up to play for Gregg Popovich this summer.
It’s no surprise to see Beal join Team USA. He’s just had a great season and he’s a close friend of Tatum, with whom he relished the opportunity to play in the 2021 NBA All-Star Game.
“It was fun, man. He’s my brother. He’s my brother forever. It was very unique and awesome to be able to share the floor with him and for both of us to start. We’ve never been in. the same team. That in itself an honor, ”said Beal, by Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington.
Now he will be able to play with Tatum and represent his country as well.
Beal just finished a season that saw him averaging 31.3 points per game and finished second in the NBA scoring race behind only Stephen Curry (32 points per game). Beal reached a career high 48.5% in the field and was named to All-NBA third team for his efforts.
On several occasions, Beal has been named a finalist for the U.S. team roster, but he has yet to compete for the official squad in a major tournament. However, he won a gold medal with the U17 team at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and averaged 18.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.2 steals per game. while making 31 of 65 3-point shots (47.7%).
Team USA’s training camp is scheduled to begin on July 7 while the basketball portion of the Olympics begins on July 25. The group stage will run until August 1 and the round of 16 will take place from August 3-7.
Team USA is still waiting for some top players to make decisions. Notably, Curry previously said he was 50-50 years old to join the team, according to the Chronicle of San Francisco. Meanwhile, LeBron James and Anthony Davis will not play in the Olympics while Kawhi Leonard now seems very unlikely to play following an ACL injury that do the Clippers care.
