Why Tom Brady’s knee injury could be a problem for the NFL and the Buccaneers

Tom Brady has apparently spent much of the 2020 NFL season dealing with a knee injury, but his recent comments about the disease could be a problem for the Buccaneers and the NFL.

In one press conference with journalists Brady confirmed on Wednesday that he has been treating his knee injury for a long time. In fact, it happened shortly after signing with the Bucs.

“It’s an injury that I’ve really suffered since April, last May. I knew I had to do something at the end of the year,” Brady said. “[I’m] glad I did. It was definitely something to be done. There was a great result. So I was very happy with it. I will be able to do different things this year than I was able to do last year. “

Brady and the Bucs won the Super Bowl, so what’s the deal with the knee injury? Well, the Buccaneers never put Brady on the injury report with a knee problem. If he dealt with the problem for that long and they didn’t do anything about it, the NFL might have to step in and fine them for it.

The NFL has yet to speak about Brady’s injury, but there is precedent for this scenario. As pointed out by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the NFL once fined the Jets for not disclosing Brett Favre’s partially torn bicep tendon in 2008, and the quarterback himself was part of the reason that happened.

It happened because, as a league source explained at the time, Favre’s constant comments about the undisclosed injury upon joining the Vikings forced the league to act. If the injury report is to have any integrity in an era of legalized gambling proliferation, the NFL may need to do the same here, given Brady’s repeated confessions that indicate he did not properly disclose the knee injury he so obviously had.

The Buccaneers may want to ask Brady to stop discussing the injury at the risk of being fined by the NFL. Even still, the damage may already be done.

Of course, the Bucs won’t hesitate to pay some money for it. After all, they’ve just picked up a Super Bowl victory and believe they’re one of the best teams in the NFL again in the 2021 season, especially if Brady is in better health than he was in 2020.

So what is a lost small change for the team? Not much, as long as they don’t get it wrong again with their injury record next season.
