Who is Richard Bland? Meet the 48-year-old Englishman tied for US Open lead
As Day 2 of the 2021 US Open draws to a close, there’s a name at the top of the ranking that many will find unknown.
Englishman Richard Bland is tied for the lead in the US Open at 5 under par on his first 36 holes. He posted an under-67 score on Friday afternoon at Torrey Pines and led most of the day. Russell Henley briefly passed him but eventually finished tied with Bland.
Bland might not be a household name, but it’s been around for a while. Here’s a look at how the 48-year-old’s career has unfolded so far as he seeks his first major tournament win.
Who is Richard Bland?
Bland has been a professional golfer since 1996. In 1998, he obtained his card on the Challenge Tour. He qualified for the European Tour with a victory in the Grand Final of the Challenge Tour 2001. Since then, Bland has been a fixture on the European scene.
He struggled at times to win enough prizes to stay on the European Tour, but managed to stay in the competition. In 2004, 2008 and 2019, Bland was able to regain his European Tour card by finishing high enough in the Challenge Tour ranking. He did the same at the qualifying school in 2007 and 2011.
Despite playing on the European Tour for almost 20 years, Bland couldn’t win an event until this year. He took that first victory at the Betfred British Masters on May 15.
Bland became the oldest winner for the first time in European Tour history, at the 478th start of his career. Only Malcolm MacKenzie had more starts (509) before securing his first victory on the European Tour.
But even before winning, Bland wasn’t complaining about his career.
“I think any amateur golfer would probably give their right arm for a living,” said Bland, by Jay Hart of Yahoo Sports. “I think they might think something different if they played it for a living, but yeah, I always… thought about it because I’m so lucky to be able to travel the world and play some of the best. courses around the world and some of the biggest tournaments in the world.
“I certainly don’t see my career right now as some kind of failure or anything like that. I just feel privileged to be able to do what I can do.”
Has Richard Bland ever won a major tournament?
Richard Bland has never won a major tournament in his career. Although he has been a professional golfer since 1996 and has been on the European Tour for a long time, the 2021 US Open is only the fourth major tournament Bland has participated in in his career.
The best Bland has done, to date, is a T-22 finish at the Open Championship in 2017. Here’s a brief history of his results in these tournaments.
