How does the NHL Draft Lottery work?
The NHL Draft Lottery determines which teams will own the top two picks in the 2021 NHL Draft. Teams have a percentage chance of landing the first overall pick determined by the reverse order of the standings. The team with the worst record, the Sabers, has the best chance of landing first overall pick.
The lottery will consist of two draws. The first will determine the general choice n ° 1. The second will determine the general choice # 2. After the first draw, each team that has not been drawn for the first choice will see its chances of landing the second choice increase in proportion to its order in the ranking of the draw. .
This year there will be 16 teams in the lottery with the addition of the Kraken expansion team which will be tied for third best odds for a top two selection.
Additionally, the Coyotes will lose their first round selection after they violated the league’s combination testing policy. As a result, if they land one of the top two picks, there will be a new coin toss to replace them.
NHL Draft Lottery Odds
As mentioned, the Sabers have the best chance of landing the first pick with a 16.6% rating. They are followed by the Ducks, Kraken, Devils and Blue Jackets. Everyone except Columbus has a 10.3% chance of landing the first overall pick.
