The average mobile game file size on the US App Store has increased 76% since 2016 as publishers continue to release larger games and publish more content in their existing titles, Sensor Tower Application intelligence the data shows.
For our analysis, we looked at the top 100 revenue-generating mobile games on the US App Store each year since 2016, and determined the file size of each title based on storage needs at the end of the year. This only includes the file size for the initial download and therefore does not include an app’s total storage footprint plus additional content.
The average game file size in 2016 was around 264 megabytes and has grown 76% over the past five years to reach almost 465MB in 2020. Last year saw a particularly significant annual increase, increasing by 30.3% year on year. The median, meanwhile, has increased 102.6% over the past five years, from around 147MB in 2016 to nearly 299MB in 2020. Last year saw an increase of 18.7% year-on-year, which was slower than in previous years.
The highest grossing game on the US App Store in 2020 was Roblox of Roblox Corporation. At the end of 2020, the title had a file size of nearly 222MB, an increase of about 20% year-on-year and 73.6% from 2016. The # 2 revenue-generating game , meanwhile, was Candy Crush Saga of King, which had a file size of around 225MB at the end of 2020, which was actually down 17.2% year on year, although it grew by a modest 5.6% from 2016 The title with the largest file size was CSR Racing 2 of Zyngadetained NaturalMotion, which occupied 3.8 gigabytes of storage on mobile devices at the end of last year, an increase of 16.6% year-on-year and 123.3% from 2016.
Among the 10 best revenue-generating App Store games in 2020 in the United States, DoubleDown of DoubleDown Interactive saw the strongest growth in file size last year, increasing from about 107% year on year to just over 99MB year on year. The fastest lift # 2 was Fortnite of Epic games, which saw its file size increase by 41.3% year on year to almost 315MB, before its removal from the App Store and Google Play in August 2020, while Clash of clans of Supercell grew 36.5% year on year to around 259MB.
The storage capacity of iPhones and iPads has grown significantly over the past few years, with the latest iPhone 12 Pro housing 512GB, providing ample space for consumers to install larger apps. In response to a host of trends, including expanded storage capacity, improved performance, and increasing gamer expectations for content, the size of games has grown every year since 2016. This has led to more experiences. “Triple A” on mobile, such as PUBG Mobile of Tencent, Call of Duty: Mobile of Activision, in collaboration with Tencent Timi Studios, and Genshin impact of miHoYo, which have benefited from constant hardware improvements over the years and all occupy over 1 GB of space. This growth in storage and performance also allows publishers to publish more content through live operations, without worrying about taking up too much space on the consumer’s device, helping to create a more engaged player base.
