Sony keeps PlayStation Store open for PS3 and PS Vita
Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that it was cutting the PlayStation Store for both the PS3 and the PS Vita. A concerted effort that would allow him to better focus on the PS5 and PS4. But the company seems to have changed its mind. Because today he announced that he would keep the stores open and operational.
However, he is still considering closing the store for the PSP. This means that you will no longer be able to purchase digital content on that particular handheld.
The news of the PlayStation Store shutdown for the PS Vita and PS3 has not received the best responses from consumers. While no consoles are in production yet, there are still a lot of people who own and use them. And despite its lack of sales, the PS Vita is still praised by many who have bought one as their favorite handheld.
It wasn’t just consumers who were surprised by Sony’s decisions. Some PS Vita game developers have said they weren’t even aware of the shutdown until the news went public.
Sony says it made the wrong decision to shut down the PS Vita PlayStation Store
It is clear that Sony’s plans to close the store on two of its older consoles were not favored by users. And Sony recognized it.
President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan says “It is clear that they made the wrong decision.” This is why the company decided to continue operations for both systems. PlayStation Store operations on the PSP will continue to cease as planned on July 2 of this year.
For PS3 and PS Vita owners, since stores will remain in business, purchases can continue to be made for digital games. Although this does not necessarily mean new versions.
Sony wanted to focus its resources more on new devices
From a business perspective, it made sense that Sony would like to reduce things for the PS3 and the PS Vita. These are older systems. And the majority of Sony’s PlayStation users are probably on PS4 and PS5.
While that’s not the only reason, directing more Sony resources to these two new systems was a factor in which the company initially decided to shut down operations for its older ones. Luckily for gamers, Sony reversed its decision to take things offline.
Having said that, Sony will always end up shutting things down someday. Ryan says the store will remain open for the PS3 and PS Vita “for the foreseeable future”. It also indicates that Sony will likely revisit the idea one day. For now, it’s business as usual.
