Sony breaks sales records with its PS5 console
The PS5 has been notoriously difficult to obtain since the console’s launch, but that hasn’t stopped sales in the United States from skyrocketing.
Sony appears to have had no problem selling enough consoles to break US sales records. A detail that may confuse some because of the challenge of being able to buy one. Of course, not being able to buy a PS5 doesn’t mean Sony isn’t making sales.
While people certainly struggled to make a purchase before they ran out of stock, Sony still sells PS5 units. Some people are lucky enough to catch one. But a large amount of inventory has also been collected by scalpers using bot programs. Beat the buyers before you can finalize the payment.
Details of Sony’s PS5 success shared by NPD Analyst Mat Piscatella on Twitter. Which also notes that sales of PS5 and Xbox Series X units “lean heavily towards disc versions”.
Sony’s PS5 sales are so good it’s the best-selling console in US history
NPD does not give exact sales figures. This is not much of a surprise as he usually doesn’t share this kind of information. But, according to Piscatella, the PS5 is the best-selling console in US history.
Beat the other top selling consoles. This includes Sony’s own PS2 and PS4. Both have been monumental successes for the company. All this despite the fact that Sony still faces stock shortages. In large part due to chip shortages that have caused inventory issues across much of the tech industry.
Plus, the PS5 isn’t just the best-selling console in US history. But the fastest selling in unit sales and dollars. And it’s only been available in the US for about five months.

Sony has sold millions of PS5s since launch
NPD may not share the exact sales figures, but Sony has already shed some light on this particular detail. Back in february Sony noted in a earnings report that its PlayStation division had had its best fiscal quarter.
The company also clarified that it sold around 4.5 million PS5 console units during its launch period. Since then, Sony has sold many more consoles. So while it’s unclear how many millions Sony has sold to date, there is at least a baseline from which to come out.
It also wouldn’t be too far to suspect that there have been at least a million more consoles sold between Sony’s report in February and now.
