More people use YouTube than any other social media platform


In news that shouldn’t surprise anyone, YouTube is once again the most popular social media platform. Engadget reports that YouTube and Facebook are still the largest social media platforms in the United States. Unfortunately for Facebook, it is no longer growing.

A report on how Americans have used social media from Pew Research Center that’s where these statistics come from. The report states that YouTube and Facebook are the most used platforms. But YouTube continues to grow and increase. In fact, the platform has grown from 73% adults to 81% in 2021.

This makes sense since everyone was locked out last year and, as a result, many are likely looking to Youtube. Those same users are still glued to the platform, it seems. Now, Facebook’s figures are the same as in 2019. Facebook still has 69% as it did two years ago.

According to Pew Research, “Facebook’s growth has stabilized over the past five years, but remains one of the most used social media sites by adults in the United States.” However, Facebook is not alone. The only other social media platform that has really seen growth is Reddit. Since 2019, Reddit has gone from 11% to 18% in two years.

YouTube is the most popular social media platform, not surprisingly anyone.

According to Pew Research, “This represents a larger trend that extends beyond the past two years, in which the rapid adoption of most of these sites and apps has slowed over the past decade.”

Even though growth is slowing, Americans are still just as addicted to social media. Facebook users, 49% of them, say they visit the site several times a day. 45% of Snapchat users use the app more than once a day. Instagram sees 38% of its users doing the same.

Now, TikTok data is not included for 2019. However, 21% of Americans say they use TikTok according to Pew Research. However, TikTok is definitely more popular among young people.

48% of Tiktok users are between 18 and 29 years old. YouTube is the big dog, although among the younger generation 95% use the platform. Then, after YouTube, it’s Instagram with 71%. Then Facebook comes in at 70%. Finally, Snapchat with 65%.

YouTube being the most popular is not surprising. A user can log into YouTube to watch a video. Then 6 hours later you can watch something unrelated to the original video. YouTube is like an unlimited rabbit hole making it as easy as possible to watch videos in small or large chunks.
