Jacob deGrom’s rehab begins against a Single-A team, seen through his opponent’s eyes

Jacob deGrom against Single-A hitters was never going to be a fair fight, even with deGrom under 100 percent. The team he was facing decided to have fun with it.

The Mets ace was in Jupiter, Fla. On Thursday night for a start in rehab with weak A St. Lucie Mets against the Palm Beach Cardinals. As the Cards hitters rose to the challenge of facing a third major league in a row (Seth Lugo and Noah Syndergaard did some rehab work Tuesday and Wednesday), the Palm Beach social team embraced the ridiculousness of take on the best of the pack.

What did deGrom look like? Judging from the live tweet, like the best pitcher in baseball against kids barely out of school.

DeGrom has done everything possible to get back the tightness on the right side. His fastball was, as they say, crisp:

Yes, the Cardinals got a baserunner – on an infield error to start the first inning. DeGrom didn’t care about the baserunner, Masyn Winn, who stole the second and third. After Wynn reached, deGrom struck out eight of the next nine batters he faced. The only ball put into play in this streak was a groundout from Jacob Buchberger.

DeGrom threw 41 shots in three scoreless, scoreless innings. The Cardinals were “relieved” not to have taken the slope for a fourth round, but to have spent it in the bullpen to throw more shots:
