Ian’s Awesome Counter is an Apple Watch app to help you focus
But its latest app is a one-off Apple Watch utility. Developed with his son, Ian’s Awesome Counter, allows you to be more focused and to be yourself.
In a blog post, Smith explains more about the genesis of the application:
My son, Ian, can sometimes have difficulty regulating and managing his attention. We have tried several different strategies to help him. One of the strategies we found most effective was giving him regular prompts throughout the day and asking him if he felt he was on the right track and staying focused. It increases personal awareness and gives us a scaffolding against which to measure progress.
Initially, it took the form of a repeating countdown and a hand click. It worked pretty well, but was rather complicated to maintain. Then something quite dramatic happened to move this strategy forward.
In 2019 my family and I visited Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. As we crossed the picturesque bridge that overlooks the castle, the clicker we were using at the time slipped out of our hands and unfortunately bounced off the edge of the bridge and into the steep ravine below us. Yikes!
After that, the two worked together to create the app. Ian even drew the icon for the app.
To get started, you’ll configure how often you want to be promoted and when prompts start and end.
If notifications are turned on, you can display an alert asking if you were on the right track.
In the historical view, you can see the performance of the last week. There are also a number of watch face complications.
The app can be used either by the person working on concentration or by a parent / guardian.
