Google One may soon have the option to “ block internet if VPN disconnects ”
Google one, the company’s storage subscription service, added a VPN (virtual private network) on higher storage tiers in October of last year. The internet giant is currently working on adding a new feature to its VPN service: the ability to block internet access when the VPN is disconnected. An APK teardown of the latest version (v1.92) of the Google One app for Android revealed this upcoming feature.
People at 9to5Google discovered strings for a setting to “block internet if VPN disconnects” in said APK file. The feature is currently marked as “beta” and is not yet available on the app. However, once it goes live, it will ensure that your internet browsing is still routed through the VPN. If your VPN connection is interrupted, you will lose internet access entirely. Of course, your Internet access is restored once the VPN is reconnected.
Additionally, “VPN will try to reconnect automatically” after restarting your device. To be fair, the app already does. However, you should note that your device will have access to the Internet until the VPN reconnects, even if the new setting “Block Internet if VPN disconnects” is enabled (provided you have enabled mobile data or you are connected to Wi-Fi). The new setting basically only works after VPN connects for the first time after restarting a device.
According to report, this setting may be available under “View details” on the “Online protection with a VPN” map. This section currently only offers a reminder on how you can add a VPN toggle in the Quick Settings menu.
Google One adds setting to block internet access when VPN disconnects
You should already know that VPNs create private internet connections over public networks. They redirect your internet traffic through a remote server, thus hiding your IP address and location from the websites you visit. Moreover, VPNs also encrypt your internet traffic. This means that no one will ever see what you are doing online – protecting you from all the evil eyes (and some not so bad ones) that are trying to prey on your internet activities.
VPNs on Android already offer features such as “Always-on VPN” and “Block connections without VPN”. However, you cannot use these features “if you have configured a VPN through an app”. With the next setting, Google One VPN users will have this capability.
This would be ideal if you never want anyone to track your internet activities. There may be times when you have to live without the internet (when the VPN goes offline), but you will be safer this way.
It is relevant to mention here that unexpected features spotted in APKs may or may not be uploaded. They only indicate what possible features are under development for a particular application. It is therefore not yet confirmed if and when Google One’s VPN will have the option to block internet access when the VPN is disconnected.
Google One v1.92 is being rolled out to users through the Play Store.
