Floyd Mayweather Against Logan Paul Rules Explained: No Judge Means There’s Only One Way To “Win”

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Logan Paul will face off in a special exhibition fight on June 6 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. The exhibit will put one of the greatest boxers of our generation up against a YouTube sensation who has a 0-1 record as a professional. Considering that the two are very different in terms of skill, experience and body type, the fight will be conducted under a special set of rules established by the Florida Boxing Commission.

In the same way as the Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. which took place last November, the fight will not count as an official fight. Whatever the outcome, Mayweather’s record will remain an impeccable 50-0 while Paul cannot improve on his 0-1 record as a professional. This will be Mayweather’s second exhibition bout, with her first taking place on December 31, 2018. Mayweather undefeated arrested kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in the first round of a three-round fight.

As for Paul, he returns to a boxing ring after a split decision loss to KSI in November 2019 in his only professional fight.

Here are the rules.

AFTER: How much will Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul earn?

Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul rules

  • No judges
  • No official winner read
  • Legal knockouts
  • KOs are at the discretion of the referee
  • No headgear
  • 10 oz. gloves
  • Eight 3-minute laps

Let’s break down these rules.

How many laps does Mayweather-Paul have?

Mayweather vs. Paul is scheduled for eight 3-minute rounds. Although Mayweather fought the majority of his boxing career in fights that were to last 12 rounds, Paul’s only professional fight – against KSI – was a scheduled six-round fight.

Will there be an announced winner?

Well, not necessarily. According to the Florida commission, there will be no judges and no official winner will be announced. “Official” may be the key word here, as an exhibition will not count towards a fighter’s actual winning and losing record. Similar to the Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones exhibit, no winner will be announced if the fight goes the distance. But there is a way for a fighter to “win”.

Are knockouts legal?

Yes, there may be a KO determined by the referee. This essentially means that the fight will be stopped at the discretion of the referee if an opponent cannot continue due to accumulated damage or a knockdown. This rule was put in place to protect fighters from unnecessary damage. Again, this won’t count as this is not an official boxing match.

What type of ring will Mayweather and Paul wear?

  • 12 oz gloves
  • No headgear

Both fighters will wear 12-ounce gloves, which is standard for amateur boxing matches between the middleweight and heavyweight divisions. Mayweather has normally worn 8 ounce gloves throughout his career.
