Everything you need to know about Google Play Pass
Google Play Pass. What is it, you might ask? Well, this is a service that Google offers to Android users that gives unlimited access to content on google play. This is the most basic explanation of what it is anyway.
But there is much more to it. So we wanted to dig deeper into what it is, what its features are, what it costs, why you would want it and much more. If you’re interested in Play Pass, which you’ve probably seen introduced to yourself in the Google Play app on your Android smartphone, then this guide is for you.
As he will seek to explain all of this in as much detail as possible.
What is the Google Play Pass?
Google Play Pass is a subscription service that you can access through your Android smartphone or tablet. You pay a one-time monthly fee and in return Google gives you access to an organized collection of games and apps.
You can use them as much as you want and install them on additional devices. As long as the Google Account you used to subscribe to the service is on these additional devices.
If you need a comparison, Play Pass is quite similar to Apple Arcade. The main difference is that Apple Arcade is strictly for games and Google Play Pass also includes apps.
How much does the Google Play Pass cost?
Google Play Pass has a monthly subscription and an annual subscription. You can therefore subscribe for the duration you prefer. Whether you plan to use the benefits of the service for an entire year or prefer to have the freedom to cancel month-to-month, Google Play Pass lets you choose either.
For a month, Play Pass will cost you $ 4.99. For one year, Play Pass will cost you $ 29.99. Subscriptions are also configured to renew automatically. So be sure to keep this in mind if you are considering a cancellation.
If you’ve set up a Google Play family account, you can also share Play Pass with up to five other people.
Where is Google Play Pass available?
You would think that Play Pass is available in all countries where the Play Store is available. But this is actually not the case. The service is available in a quite a number regions however.
In total, the service is available in 90 regions. This includes the US, UK, Russia, Poland, Italy, France, Angola, Chile, and many more. You can find the full list of regions available for Play Pass on this link.
It’s also worth noting that if Play Pass is available in your region, you should be able to see the option to sign up for it in the Play Store on your device. Just tap on your profile picture in the top right corner of the Play Store app, and Play Pass should be listed further down the menu.
What apps and games are available on Play Pass?
Honestly, there are too many to list them all here. But you’ll be happy to know that the service as a whole offers access to hundreds and hundreds of apps and games. And Google is constantly adding more to keep things always fresh.
Having said that, the service started out a bit slow. Now, however, things seem to have improved and there is a lot more to offer. Some of the more recent things added to the Play Pass include games like Evoland 2, Botanicula, Crying Suns, Night Of The Full Moon, The Ramen Sensei, Pocket League Story, Laser Quest, and many more.
If you want to see everything that Play Pass has to offer for yourself, go to the Play Pass section of the Play Store and press the button To explore button. This will allow you to browse the content that you have access to with your subscription.
What types of features does the Play Pass have?
Really, there aren’t a lot of major features to speak of. You have the option to share the service with up to five people. And that’s really all. What he has is quite cut and dry. Pay monthly fees and get access to hundreds of apps and games.
Use and play them as much as you want while your subscription is active.
Does the content have in-app purchases?
No. All Play Pass content is completely exempt from in-app purchases. Which means you’ll never spend a single penny on anything. The point is, Play Pass will likely never include games that rely more on micro-transactions.
Then again, these types of apps and games are usually free already. The main advantage of Play Pass is that the games and apps included are premium games and apps. It would normally cost money if you wanted to install them. With Play Pass, you forgo spending money on individual installations for unlimited access with a subscription.
It’s quite a good deal if you use premium apps and play premium games a lot. Some free games and apps are included. These are likely to have at least one or two in-app purchases that would unlock full versions of their content. But with Play Pass you get it for free.
How do I register?
Signing up is actually quite easy to do. You must first open the Play Store on any supported Android device. Next, tap on your profile picture which is on the top right corner of the Play Store app.
This will bring up a menu with options such as my apps and games, library, Play Protect, and Play Pass Just to name a few. Tap on the Play Pass option and you will be taken to another screen which will allow you to ‘get started’. By pressing the Start button, you will complete the subscription setup.
From there, you can browse all the content available on the service. Then just find what you like and install it on any of your compatible Android devices.
Are there any advertisements to manage?
Not one. All apps and games on the service that may contain ads are completely ad-free when you have a Play Pass subscription. This goes hand in hand with the lack of micro-transactions. As you also avoid in-app purchases when you subscribe.
Again, this is mostly premium content. And anyway, a lot of premium content doesn’t have ads or in-app purchases. So that’s something to keep in mind. The real strength of the service is having access to premium content without having to purchase each piece of content individually.
Are downloads shared among family members?
No. Google has set things up so that downloads are not shared between Play Pass subscribers. Because the service is linked to the individual emails of each person in the family group, any downloaded games or apps go directly to that person’s device and no one else.
This will help prevent your device from being loaded with games or apps that you would never play or use.
Do I need an Android device to access the service?
Yes. Play Pass is only available for Android devices. However, this includes both smartphones and tablets. Your device will need to be running Android 4.4 or later and have Play Store version 16.6.25 or later for this to work.
Google doesn’t say it works with Chromebooks, but a Chromebook is pictured on the official Play Pass landing page and users reported it worked well over a year ago. Your Chromebook should therefore work fine if you have one.
What happens to downloads if I cancel Play Pass?
Play Pass is a subscription service. While active, you can download and use games or apps for free instead of paying for them. They will also be free of ads and in-app / in-game purchases, as mentioned above.
If you cancel your Play Pass subscription, you will lose access to those games or apps. However, you can continue to use them for the remaining days of your subscription. In case the apps or games were free, they will remain ad-free for the same period.
Will games or apps ever be removed from the service?
Sometimes yes. Google states that from time to time games and apps may exit the Play Pass service. If this happens, the usage is still there, much like it is for the remaining days of your subscription after canceling it.
If the deleted game or app is free, access can continue, but ads will start to appear. Google says access can continue for “a while” if the content has been paid for, but users will eventually have to purchase that content.
How do I manage my Play Pass subscription?
It’s pretty straightforward too. Same as any other Play Store subscription – from the menu. The subscriptions will be listed just under the library option in the user menu which you access from the top right corner of the Play Store app.
Just like for registration, tap on your profile picture and payments and subscriptions will be the third option down. Tap on it to open the subscriptions menu and if you are subscribed to Play Pass, you will see it in the list. You can then cancel at any time from this location.
Are there any issues with the service?
The main problem is still the same as that of Play Pass since its launch. While that’s less of a problem now than it started out there, there aren’t really that many games or apps available as part of the service. However, this will continue to change over time. Google said at the start that it was committed to adding more games and apps to Play Pass every month. And it is done so far.
Another problem is the quality of the content available. Some of the included content is missing. However, everyone’s tastes are different and some users will find the content library in Play Pass to be very good. Again, this is another thing that will improve over time as Google adds new things.
Can I sign up for Play Pass with a work or school account?
Unfortunately no. Play Pass is only available for personal Google Accounts and not for those related to work or school.
Why should I sign up for the Google Play Pass?
This is primarily for people who use a lot of app content. And even more specifically for people who tend to lean towards premium content. If that’s you and you’re trying to pay top dollar for everything you download, this is an alternative way to access hundreds of premium games and apps.
In this case, it is a good reason to register. Another good reason is that you have family members or friends who are part of your Google Play Family account. This allows everyone to access the Play Pass service for the same monthly fee you already pay. Which means a lot of free content for everyone involved. Sharing is caring, and sharing Play Pass with your friends and family is a nice little gift.
