Amazon Luna is the newest of the cloud gaming services available to gamers, but it’s also the only one that has never offered 720p streaming as an option. It is now over. Because Amazon announced today that it now offers the lower resolution option for streaming.
In short, it now works better with the crappy internet. So if your connection is poor, setting the streaming to 720p should definitely help. “Should” does not necessarily mean it will. And there is a difference between a bad internet connection and a slow internet connection.
Your internet connection might be slow and work fine for cloud gaming. Google Stadia for example, works over the internet with download speeds as low as 5-10 Mbps. Luna is the same. But things don’t always work so well when your connection is bad, as it kicks in and drops more often.
Amazon positions 720p streaming for Luna as a savior for data limits
Amazon may intend this to be a benefit for data limits, but many people these days don’t have data limits on their plan. And those that do are likely to have 1TB caps. Which is a lot unless you’re just streaming games through Luna all day every day.
Still, the 720p streaming option will actually help Amazon Luna users use less data. Compared to 1080p which consumes around 10GB per hour, 720p streaming will use half of it. So, you will only spend 5 GB per hour when playing games at the lower resolution. If you’re playing games on a smartphone screen, 720p also provides a pretty decent viewing experience.
Of course, the fact that it needs less bandwidth will really benefit users who don’t have reliable internet connections. Whatever the speeds.
Setting your streams to 720p is quick and easy
There are a few steps to reduce your feeds to a more manageable resolution. The first one obviously being that you need to have Luna open and running.
From there just go to the settings menu and the quality of the stream should be one of the first things you see. Listed under the video resolution option at the top of the page, you will see both 1080p and 720p. Now 720p is not the default like it is with Xbox Game Pass. So you will need to set it to 720p if you want to use it. There is also an option for 4K, but this is not yet available.
