Al Aasy leads the Coronation Cup field | Race News
Al Aasy leads seven contenders for Friday’s Coral Coronation Cup at Epsom.
The four-year-old William Haggas is a big favorite to clinch Group 1 gold on first demand after two comfortable Group 3 wins this quarter, in the John Porter and Aston Park Stakes, both at Newbury.
However, Al Aasy won’t have everything in his own way, with Aidan O’Brien lining up two prominent artists in his own brothers Mogul and Japan.
Japan returned to form with a victory in the Ormonde Stakes in Chester last month, while Mogul has finished seventh in the Dubai Sheema Classic and third in the Prix Ganay in his two starts in 2021 so far.
The two are no strangers to Epsom, with Japan finishing third in the 2019 Derby, while Mogul was seventh in the Classic last year.
Another horse familiar with the Downs is Pylediver, who represents William Muir and Chris Grassick.
The four-year-old had a miserable run in last year’s Derby, but won Group 2 gold at Royal Ascot and York, before finishing in a nice third place in the St Leger at Doncaster.
He warmed up for this outing by chasing Sir Ron Priestley home in Newmarket last month.
The Alpinista and Albaflora pair owned by Kirsten Rausing, coached by Sir Mark Prescott and Ralph Beckett respectively, as well as Paul’s Highland Chief and Oliver Cole’s court complete the roster.
